New batch of Filipino scholars set to pursue postgraduate studies in Australia
Manila, Philippines - Another batch of 25 Filipinos are set to pursue postgraduate studies in Australia by June 2022 as Australia Awards scholars.
During their pre-departure briefing, Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Steven J. Robinson AO told the scholars, "I commend your commitment to using the skills that you will gain in Australia to make a difference and contribute to Philippine development. As we recover from the impact of the pandemic, Australia is committed to supporting the Philippines in its road to recovery, and we hope that you will partner with us in this endeavour through your re-entry action plans."
Australia Awards are prestigious, transformational scholarships and short courses offered to emerging leaders from developing countries for study, research, and professional development in Australia and the region so they can return home and contribute to their nations' development, prosperity and resilience.
On return to the Philippines, scholars will implement a re-entry action plan (REAP), which will apply their learnings in Australia to meaningful projects that will further development in their respective organisations or communities.
Roy Hatague, Senior Economic Development Specialist at the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), will pursue a Master of Engineering Management at the University of Melbourne. He is committed to using the knowledge and skills he will gain in Australia to help improve the transport system in Mindanao. "As a road transport coordinator, I will introduce in my region, strategies and best practices gained from Australia, which has one of the best transport systems in the world," he said.
Amor Elianina Obispo, Supervising Administrative Officer at the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), will study Master of Digital Communication and Culture at the University of Sydney. She plans to develop strategies that will further empower DTI public servants deliver excellent public service, adding: "The DTI family has always taken pride in the agency's reputation and the positive image brought on by delivering Serbisyong Higit pa sa Inaasahan (service beyond what is expected). I hope to create a platform that will facilitate meaningful conversations about DTI work and leading purposive lives and where people and performance are the priority."
Meanwhile, Danisa May Fuentebella, who will take up a Master of Architectural Science at the University of Sydney, will give back to her hometown in Tacloban City. "I'm looking forward to pioneering the application of sustainable architecture to post-disaster relocation shelters in Tacloban City, and hopefully the rest of the country," she said.
Filipino scholars will pursue programs aligned to priority areas such as public health and social protection, trade and economics, digital economy and cyber security, infrastructure and smart cities, and peace and development.
At the conclusion of their studies, the Australia Awards scholars will join the dynamic Australia Global Alumni community in the Philippines.
"Australia Awards provides an extensive network of outstanding and dedicated individuals who excel academically and assume leadership roles in their own country upon their return," said Ambassador Robinson.
